What is CENTRONICS

Centronics is a type of parallel interface that was widely used in the past to connect computers and peripherals such as printers, scanners, and storage devices.

The Centronics interface was developed by the Centronics Data Computer Corporation in the 1970s and was later standardized as IEEE 1284.

The Centronics interface uses a 36-pin connector that consists of 18 data pins, 8 control pins, and 10 ground pins. The data pins are used to transfer information between the computer and the peripheral device in parallel, which means that multiple bits of data are transferred at the same time.

This allows for faster data transfer rates than serial interfaces, which transfer data one bit at a time.

The Centronics interface was widely used in the 1980s and 1990s before being replaced by newer and faster interfaces such as USB and Ethernet.

However, it is still used in some legacy systems and in specialized applications where high-speed parallel data transfer is required.

The Centronics interface is often associated with the Centronics printer port, which was a standard feature on many personal computers in the 1980s and 1990s.

The printer port allowed users to connect a printer directly to their computer and print documents without the need for a separate print server or network connection.

The Centronics printer port was later replaced by USB and other interfaces, but its legacy lives on in the term LPT port, which is still used to refer to printer ports on some systems.
